Copenhagen 1925: A man appears in the beam of a lantern, disappears back into the darkness, and reappears in the light of the next lantern. Where has he been in the meantime? The observer of this scene, Werner Heisenberg, is led to develop a theory that will ultimately create a completely new worldview: quantum mechanics. The man in the dark, however, is unaware of the role he has played in the discovery of new physical laws - he is trying to cope with the loss of his wife and give his life a new direction. Christian Haller, who continues to weave together these two coincidentally linked life paths, creates a clairvoyant literary puzzle about grief and loneliness, the limits of our understanding, and the question of how the new enters our world.
