Stellvertretung im Mittelalter

In the Middle Ages, representation was important as a legitimizing principle of sacralized rule (representation of God/Christ on earth) and as a necessary instrument of lordship in political, ecclesiastical, economic, legal, and social life. However, this phenomenon has rarely been examined in historical research, especially in contrast to theology and legal history. There is a lack of in-depth research on the concepts and forms of representation, including their differences in terminology and content. The aim of this volume is to analyze and compare concepts, agents, and signs of primarily religiously connoted or clerically based representation in the Western and Eastern Christian Churches, Islam, the Mongol Empire, and Japan.
