Olivier Guez was obsessed with football as a child, played in youth leagues, and later reported on it as a journalist. His book is a tribute to South American football and an exploration of the art of dribbling: the first black players began dribbling to avoid contact with white defenders and to prevent being beaten on the field and after the game. It developed on beaches, using a bundle of socks or a small rubber ball. It is a hip movement, similar to that of samba dancers and capoeira fighters, playful, acrobatic, and the hallmark of the greatest soloists from Leonidas and Pelé to Diego Maradona.
