Pocahontas I outlines the story of the historical Pocahontas: her famous (alleged) rescue of the red-haired English captain from death on a stone block, her assistance to the settlers during the first winters, her capture in 1613, her baptism under the name Rebecca, and her marriage to the planter John Rolfe in 1614; the cultivation of the first North American tobacco that was palatable to English tastes. The birth of a son, Thomas Rolfe, Pocahontas's journey to England in 1616, and her death on the Thames in 1617. Her story as the "foremother of all Americans," as depicted by American baptism and the arts in the centuries that followed. The second strand of the volume outlines the significance of the Jamestown/Pocahontas story for Shakespeare's last completed play, "The Tempest." Thirdly: a pictorial history of "the Indian" from 1600 to the present.
