This glorious design comes from Sangorski & Sutcliffe, a world-renowned British bookbinding company best known for its jewel-encrusted binding of Omar Khayyam's Rubaiyat. Founded in London in 1901, Sangorski & Sutcliffe quickly rose to become one of the most significant bookbinders of the 20th century. They were particularly celebrated for their jewel-encrusted bindings, such as the one reproduced here. Originally created in 1922 to house Rudyard Kipling's poem "Recessional," written in 1897 for Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee, it featured real turquoise, aquamarines, and rubies, as well as medieval illuminations by Alberto Sangorski and gold stamping by George Sutcliffe.
