Product details

Recording Pressing Few bands from the hippie era embody the idealism and hedonism of the late sixties as much as Jefferson Airplane. Two years after their groundbreaking psychedelic rock album "Surrealistic Pillow," the San Francisco musicians released "Volunteers" in 1969, which served as something of a manifesto for the counterculture. Deeply rooted in the belief that music could change the world, the songs on "Volunteers" addressed the Vietnam War, politics, greed, and environmental destruction, calling for revolution. The lyrics sparked controversy, and Jefferson Airplane's record label RCA wanted to censor the album. However, RCA was not concerned about the political content but rather feared a boycott due to some obscene passages. Ultimately, the band prevailed in court, and the album was released. Musically, "Volunteers," one of the first albums recorded with a 16-track machine, moves between psychedelic acid rock and rustic country rock. The group, led by singer Grace Slick, along with notable guest musicians Stephen Stills, David Crosby, Nicky Hopkins, and Jerry Garcia, are in top form. The 180g vinyl double LP with 45 rpm has been remastered in half-speed by Krieg Wunderlich and Rob LoVerde. Line-up: Jack Casady - Bass, Spencer Dryden - Drums, Jorma Kaukonen - Guitar, Grace Slick, Marty Balin, Paul Kantner, Ace Of Cups - Vocals, Stephen Stills - Organ, Jerry Garcia - Steel Guitar, Nicky Hopkins - Piano.
