Milk

San Francisco, 1972. Harvey Milk (Sean Penn) and his partner Scott Smith (James Franco) are fed up with life in New York and seek their fortune on the West Coast. They open a small photo shop in the working-class neighborhood of Castro: "Castro Camera." Soon, the business becomes a meeting point and information hub at the heart of the neighborhood, largely thanks to Harvey Milk's warm, exuberant personality. It doesn't take long for Milk to discover his passion for politics: his focus is on the interests of the everyday people in his community and the gay community. Milk organizes street festivals in the Castro District and is always at the forefront when it comes to protesting against discrimination.

During three election campaigns for the San Francisco City Council, Milk gains countless supporters and friends, especially his advisor Cleve Jones (Emile Hirsch), who stands by him tirelessly. However, during this time, his long-term relationship with Scott begins to crumble. With his new partner Jack Lira (Diego Luna) by his side, Milk finally secures a seat on the City Council in the 1977 election. Barely in office, Milk initiates a multitude of political initiatives, which does not win him friends. One of his opponents, Milk's fellow council member Dan White (Josh Brolin), ultimately turns out to be his arch-nemesis.
