Product details
- The nine Azores islands belong to Portugal and are located in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean - 1500 km from the coast of Portugal and 3500 km from America; they are of volcanic origin, very green due to the weather and offer a well-marked hiking network - the archipelago consists of three island groups - the eastern group with Sao Miguel and Santa Maria, the central group with Terceira, Sao Jorge, Graciosa, Pico and Faial. The western group with the islands of Flores and Corvo, the capital of the Azores is Ponta Delgada on Sao Miguel - The Azores are known for their wealth of different vegetation, the most popular hiking season is the time of the hydrangea blossom in July and August. Each island has its own special character: Flores is the most westerly and greenest with the most westerly hiking trail in Europe along the coast between Ponta Delgada and Faja Grande; on the neighbouring island of Corvo you can hike into the island crater with the five volcanic lakes (Caldeirao).- The highest peak in Portugal is Pico (2351 metres) on the Azores island of the same name - a must for every hiker starting from the refuge at 1225 metres. Sao Jorge is considered a prime hiking island with ridges of up to 1000 m in the centre of the island and the "fajas", alluvial cones off the coast, which can be reached via mule tracks. Hiking highlights are the tours from one faja to the next, always with a view of the AtlanticLanguages: German, Portuguese, English.
