Destination: The second-largest island in the Mediterranean is full of contrasts: secluded bays, a crystal-clear sea shimmering in all shades of turquoise, as well as remote mountain villages, forests of cork and oak trees, and idyllic vineyards.
Spectacular bays: The Golfo di Orosei, together with the Monti del Gennargentu, is protected as a national park, and many of its bays can only be reached by water. One of the most beautiful is Cala di Luna.
Sardinia's underground: 300 caves and grottos have been explored so far, including the cathedral-like Grotta di Nettuno, the Grotta del Bue Marino, the Grotta Verde, and the Grotta di Ispinigoli with its 38-meter-high stalagmites.
Nuraghi and Tombe dei Giganti: prehistoric cult sites, watchtowers made of granite and basalt, Bronze Age settlements in the mountains and along the coast. A total of 7,000 Nuraghe ruins remain, including the fascinating settlement of Tiscali, which was built in the rock crevice of Monte Tiscali.
Secluded mountain villages: A long mountain range forms the backbone of the island. Winding roads with fantastic panoramas lead to the mountain villages of the provinces of Barbagia and Ogliastra.
Oristano is the most important city in western Sardinia, located near the Phoenician settlement of Tharros.
