The idea of what a nation is and what constitutes one's own nation is subject to constant change. The various concepts of &bdquo,nation&ldquo, have had a decisive influence on European history since the middle of the nineteenth century.

This thematic issue is concerned with

• the question of &bdquo,German identity&ldquo, the foundations of various notions of identity, their manifestations and their effects up to the present day,

• with the development of a national idea in Poland and Germany and the conflict-ridden formation of two nation states,

• with migrations to Germany in the 19th and 20th centuries and their effects on &bdquo,the&ldquo, German nation.

The students can use the development of these topics as a means of

• apply and consolidate their competences in dealing with history in a methodologically conscious way and
