South of Landsberg am Lech, the gentle hills of the Pfaffenwinkel begin, a name derived from a somewhat casual term for "pastor." The Pfaffenwinkel stretches approximately between the rivers Lech and Loisach, encompassing parts of the Fünfseenland, the Isarwinkel, and the Lechrain. As you head south, the landscape changes; the flat land of the Lechfeld gradually transitions into the hilly pre-Alpine region, with farmland slowly giving way to lush pastures that increasingly shape the scenery. Numerous churches and monasteries in the Bavarian Baroque and Rococo styles dot the charming landscape, with onion domes proudly rising against the white-blue sky. The most famous of these places of worship is the Wieskirche. Explore the ornate churches and monasteries or learn more about the region's unique features in one of the many museums. Beautiful towns and cities such as Weilheim or Schongau invite visitors to discover numerous attractions. Don't miss the world-renowned Passion Play location of Oberammergau at the foot of the Ammergau Alps. Be enchanted by the two royal castles of Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau near Füssen, and discover the nature reserves of Altenauer Moor and Murnauer Moos. The Romantic Road, originally designed for motorized excursions, connects a series of attractive towns with rich histories and historic city centers. The approximately 496-kilometer cycling route runs from Landsberg to Füssen along the Lech, also passing right through the Pfaffenwinkel. Other cycling routes that touch this region include the Via Claudia Augusta, the Schlosspark cycling loop in the Allgäu, and the Ammer-Amper cycle path.
