With biographical information about Otto Schoff:
Otto Schoff (1884-1938)
Otto Schoff was born on May 24, 1884, in Bremen. He completed an apprenticeship as a decorative painter at the Bremen School of Arts and Crafts. In 1903, he studied in Frankfurt am Main and Darmstadt under Otto Linnemann and F.W. Kleukens; from 1909 to 1912 and in 1914, he attended the teaching institution of the Royal School of Arts and Crafts in Berlin, where he was a student of Emil Orlik. One of his first exhibitions took place in 1914 at the Graphic Cabinet J.B. Neumann in Berlin. From 1920 onwards, he created numerous graphic sheets, book illustrations, and portfolio works for the dealers Fritz Gurlitt and Alfred Flechtheim. He participated in the Great Berlin Art Exhibition, the Jury-Free Art Show in Berlin, the Berlin Secession, among others.
Despite his pronounced preference for the female gender, Otto Schoff repeatedly engaged with homosexual themes in his works. After the private printing of the Gurlitt Press's 'The Chariot of Venus' was confiscated, Schoff's portfolio works such as 'Brothel', 'Orgies', 'Boy Love', and 'Love Games' were published without location, publisher, or date for safety reasons. Schoff died on July 3, 1938, after the Gestapo confiscated part of his paintings in his studio at Nollendorfplatz the day before.
The publisher is Hans-Jürgen Döpp, who is known as a collector and publisher of a large number of books on this subject.
