During this period, the community of the city of Chemnitz was shaped into a Saxon industrial metropolis with unimaginable dynamism: with 100,000 inhabitants in 1883, the municipality crossed the formal threshold to becoming a large city - until shortly after the turn of the century, another 100,000 inhabitants were added in ten-year increments. Chemnitz became a boomtown. A magnificent city emerged. The outlying districts were taken over by both densely populated workers' quarters and luxurious residential areas for the privileged classes. Among other things, the economy, politics, administration, infrastructure and architecture had to keep pace with the strong growth. The imperial period was thus one of the most formative epochs in the history of the city of Chemnitz, which finally took a drastic turn for the worse with the First World War. The articles by 15 authors illuminate the diversity of social and cultural developments in Chemnitz. A multitude of hitherto unpublished historical photographs, elaborately painted marksmen's targets, large ladies' gowns and colourful uniforms allow the image of the people in the streets of the city to shine through once again and provide a vivid testimony of the bourgeois discourse of progress of the time to this day. With the wide range of objects from the collection of the Schloßbergmuseum, the anniversary volume offers an insight into the attitude to life of those decades.
