The route: The approximately 465 km long path leads from the cathedral city of Cologne through the flat Dutch polder landscapes to the vast Rhine Delta near Rotterdam and finally to the sea at Hoek van Holland. The most notable places and cities along the way include Cologne, Düsseldorf, Xanten, Arnhem, Woudrichem, Dordrecht, Rotterdam, Schiedam, and Hoek van Holland. The main rivers are the Rhine, Waal, Leek, and Maas. Along the route in Germany, you can find the UNESCO World Heritage Site Cologne Cathedral, the medieval customs town of Zons, Düsseldorf's old town, the imperial city of Kaiserswerth, and the Archaeological Park in Xanten. In the Netherlands, highlights include the old towns of Arnhem, Wijk bij Duurstede, Woudrichem, Dordrecht, and Schiedam; the nature reserves northwest of Arnhem; the ports with old windmills, canals, and traditional sailing ships, for example in Dordrecht and Schiedam; and the dunes and beach at Hoek van Holland.
