Product details
In the northeast of the Brandenburg region, not far from Berlin yet a world away from the hustle and bustle of city life, lies one of Germany's largest districts – Uckermark. The face of Uckermark is shaped by massive glaciers that rolled across the land during the last Ice Age around 15,000 years ago. Gentle hills, enormous boulders, dense forests, and vast open landscapes, along with over 500 lakes, define the pristine scenery. There are large stone and burial mounds, fields, meadows, and historic cobblestone streets. The traces of human settlement date back to the Neolithic era. Three national natural landscapes – the Lower Oder Valley National Park, the Schorfheide-Chorin Biosphere Reserve, and the Uckermark Lakes Nature Park – protect more than half of Uckermark's natural heritage.
Architecture, art, and culture in Uckermark are closely intertwined with the history of the landscape. Churches, farms, and megalithic tombs have always been built from the deposits left by glaciers. Castles, manor houses, and estates were also constructed from field stones. There are few places in Germany with such a high concentration of these structures in such a small area. The most important towns in the district include Angermünde with its small, narrow streets, Prenzlau with the prominently visible towers of St. Mary's Church, Templin with its medieval city wall, and Schwedt/Oder with the nearby charming river valley of the Lower Oder.
Discover Uckermark on a cycling tour through a landscape that is predominantly flat but also features some uneven terrain. Key long-distance cycling routes on the map include the Berlin-Usedom Cycle Route, which allows you to traverse Uckermark relatively centrally. The Oder-Neisse Cycle Route runs along the eastern edge of the district at the border with Poland, while the Tour Brandenburg is located in the southwest. Among the most beautiful regional routes is the Manor House Cycling Tour.
