With the bourgeois tragedy "Kabale und Liebe" Schiller succeeded once again in achieving a great stage success after the "Robbers". By juxtaposing the first printing and the Mannheim Soufflierbuch (both
1874), the study edition shows how intensively Schiller worked on the theatrical version in order to meet the demands of stage and play length on the one hand and the restrictions of etiquette and censorship on the other. It thus provides interesting insights into the stage practice of the time. Twelve copperplate engravings by Daniel Chodowiecki, the most popular German graphic artist of the 18th century, illustrate the study edition.
