Arabic Typography

Although Arabic is the third most commonly used script in the world, there is a lack of good typographic literature. This publication is a multidisciplinary reference work that combines the latest scientific findings with applied typography. By focusing on elements specifically related to Arabic script, it avoids overlaps with the extensive literature on Latin typography, allowing for a precise representation and making it relevant and accessible to a broad readership.

The first part provides a well-founded synthesis of the history and development of Arabic typography through several contributions from a group of practice-oriented young scholars. In the more extensive second part, these historical foundations are complemented by a concise guide to Arabic typography. Inspired by Jost Hochuli's standard work "Detail in Typography," all relevant microtypographic parameters are vividly addressed.
