Alpenleder employees exclusively with full-grain leather. All products are made from whole hides, the leathers are between 1.2 mm and 3.5 mm thick. Alpenleder uses both cowhide and buffalo leather. These are so-called open leathers, which cannot hide their flaws through structural embossing or colour, but stand by their origin. Each individual hide is checked by a specialist to determine whether it is suitable for the bags. The leathers currently used are all vegetable-tanned: the tanning process does not use toxic chrome salts, but tree bark. Only azo-free dyes from European production are used for the coloured leathers. For a large part of the collection, no chemical dyes are used at all and the leathers are preserved exclusively with oil. The unique feel, impregnation, patina and intense colour are created by boiling in pure vegetable fat. The leather remains open-pored and retains its natural properties, such as the pull-up effect, which fills in scuffs and scratches by brushing. Bags from Alpenleder become more beautiful the longer they are worn.
