Alpenleder exclusively works with "full-grain leather." All products are made from whole hides, with leather thickness ranging from 1.2 mm to 3.5 mm. Alpenleder uses both cowhide and buffalo leather. These are so-called "open" leathers that cannot hide their imperfections through structural embossing or color but stand by their origin. Each individual hide is inspected by a specialist to determine its suitability for the bags.

The leathers currently used by Alpenleder are all vegetable-tanned: In the tanning process, they do not use toxic chrome salts as is common, but instead tan the leather with tree bark. They also use only azo-free dyes from European production for the colored leathers. For the majority of the collection, they even completely forgo chemical dyes and preserve the leather solely with oil. The unique feel, water resistance, patina, and intense color tone are achieved through boiling in pure vegetable fat.

The leather remains open-pored and retains its natural properties, such as the pull-up effect, which fills in scratches and scuffs through rubbing. Alpenleder bags become more beautiful the longer they are used.
