All products are made from whole hides, with leather thickness ranging from 1.2 mm to 3.5 mm. Alpenleder uses both cowhide and buffalo leather. These are so-called "open" leathers that do not hide their imperfections through structural embossing or color but stand by their origin. Each hide is examined by a specialist to determine its suitability for the bags. The leathers currently used by Alpenleder are all vegetable-tanned: In the tanning process, no toxic chrome salts are used as is common, but rather the leathers are tanned with tree bark. They also exclusively use azo-free dyes from European production for the dyed leathers. For the majority of the collection, they even completely forgo chemical dyes and preserve the leathers solely with oil. The unique feel, water resistance, patina, and intense color tone are achieved through boiling in pure vegetable fat. The leather remains open-pored and retains its natural properties, such as the pull-up effect, which allows scratches and scuffs to be filled in by rubbing. Bags from Alpenleder only get more beautiful the longer they are used.
