Summary:
So far, little is known about how important the time spent in the womb is for later life. The journey into life is often not undertaken alone. At least one in ten is not alone at the beginning of pregnancy. If twins are in the womb and one dies, it is a tremendous shock for the survivor, which later remains unconscious. A void is left in the soul, which is formative for the lives of many affected individuals. Tormenting longing, loneliness, and inexplicable feelings of guilt can be the result of this early loss, for example. The lost twin is sought everywhere. Many famous musicians and film plots draw from the search for this lost unity.

Perhaps you are not alone in your mother's womb at the beginning of pregnancy. You may sense your brother or sister. You hear his or her heartbeat and move together with him or her, playing in the oceans of amniotic fluid. One day, the other stops growing. His heart weakens, and he dies. Then you are alone. After birth, a veil of forgetfulness falls over everything you experienced before. Is everything you went through back then completely gone and resolved?

Diploma psychologist Alfred R. Austermann and social educator Bettina Austermann have been therapeutically accompanying adults, adolescents, and children for many years. With solid facts and touching case studies, they sensitively describe the effects of early loss and show paths to emotional healing.
