Stromern

Andor Endre Gelléri (1906-1945) was already regarded as a master of the short narrative form during his lifetime. "Stromern" brings together 31 stories from the 1920s and 1930s, in which he addresses the excluded, the short and the fallen through the grid. Budapest is marked by the consequences of the global economic crisis, and the protagonists of the stories get to feel this first hand. Gelléri knew the reality of his characters' lives only too well, he himself worked in countless professions, had to work hard for his daily meals - and yet managed again and again to create a very unique literature. The great art of Gelléri, which Timea Tankó has translated into colourful and infectious playfulness, consists in recognising the fate of every character. They may resemble each other, the dyer journeymen and weaver apprentices, the shoemaker and Mö.
