Franz Karl Stanzel's involvement with James Joyce began in 1955 with an account of the arch situations in Ulysses. It was a first attempt to make it easier for German-speaking readers to read this difficult text. Later, Stanzel turned his attention to showing the traces left in Ulysses by Joyce's stay in Old Austria in 1904-1915 as an English teacher in Pola (Pula) and Trieste. In the process, aspects were uncovered that provided new answers to some of the most debated questions in the interpretation of the novel: Was Leopold Bloom of Jewish descent? Why is his daughter Milly blond? Did Bloom work for the Austrian secret service in Zurich during World War I? Does Bloom represent the type of the "feminine man" according to Otto Weininger?
