The textbook introduces current questions, debates and approaches of contemporary, analytical philosophy of language and shows the influence of philosophy of language on other areas of philosophy. Special attention is paid to pragmatics, which examines how we use language to communicate. Of course, the classical topics are also covered, such as the history of modern philosophy of language since Frege, semantics including theories of meaning and truth. The introduction is aimed at students of philosophy and other subjects; it does not require any previous knowledge of philosophy or linguistics.
