What is the maximum resolution that can be delivered via the HDMI connection?
So I'm sorry I messed up this time. I did some research and found out that a "Dp alternatemode" has been implemented in the USB-C standard. So it is possible A) It should be possible to output Dp signals as well as HDMi signals via the USB-C port. B) How well this works would have to be read up on in experience reports, and in my opinion that's your job! And of course you want to know if it is technically possible, if it wasn't it wouldn't work like that. In my opinion, it should be possible to control your monitor via USB-C, but I can't tell you how well it works because I don't own these devices. I would recommend a product like this: http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna...
So just in case your monitor has a Dp connection. You are by the way right with the statement that USB-C can transmit 4k signals but I am not sure about HDMI (here you can find all performance data about HDMI ==>https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki...). I can't say any more about it than I have now, and it's probably necessary for you to be a bit more active yourself. If possible I would choose the dp adapter, I had some problems with the frame rate etc. with HDMI and high resolutions.

A "dp alternatemode" was published for the USB-C standard in 2014. I took your criticism to heart and read up on it in various forums and it is confirmed that usb c has a dp alt mode. So technically nothing stands in the way of your project.
Otherwise, if you are not satisfied with my answer, please google for reviews yourself. I apologise for the misinformation.
Greetings and good luck

Thank you for the answer. I need to be more specific: I want to connect this adapter to the XPS 12 and to the Dell U2711 with 2560x1440@60Hz. Is the signal delivered correctly?
Depending on the standard, a maximum of 2k resolution is delivered at a 24hz frequency (frames per second). I would advise against using HDMI cables as soon as you are working with 2k resolutions. From 2k resolutions and high frame rates, only Displayport is currently recommended, which is also the standard for better equipped PC monitors.
The notebook does not have a MiniDP. Your statements are not correct in my opinion, as it is a USB-C and not a USB 3.0 adapter. (see product) And these are very well capable of delivering e.g. 4k. My question is not about whether it is technically possible, but I would like to know whether it actually works.
