an AC adapter, also known as a power adapter or charger, is a device that converts alternating current (AC) from an electrical outlet into direct current (DC) that can be used by electronic devices such as computers, laptops and smartphones.
When you plug a power adapter into a wall socket, it converts the high-voltage alternating current into the low-voltage direct current that your computer or other device needs to operate. DC = direct current

Camera is operated with direct current. However, alternating current comes from the socket. The adapter therefore changes AC to DC
