Unfortunately, I can't find the statement you mentioned about the second usable memory in the description of the device. In any case, you can connect all kinds of devices via USB - including external hard drives. Or work with a NAS via the network, which I would generally recommend for backing up data. 
I have installed many of these AiOs for customers and they are really great devices! In terms of performance and appearance.

Yes, of course you can connect an external device for storage, data transfer or backup.
You can connect it via USB or LAN.
I do my back-ups via USB and I have a NAS connected via the LAN.
