I don’t think this is the thing you are looking for.
As far as I know the new MacBooks do have a USB-C type connector. So you need to look for USB-C to lightning .

just to be clear I have the latest Mac air 13 which has thunderbolt (2 small ports) on the side. I have an iPhone 6 and iPad Air 2 which both use same (I don't know what's called but has the 3 little prongs). Now I have a LaCie hard drive which I will need to connect as it has my photos and music...and that also has the 3 prong icon (confusing the 3 prong icon part from the Iphone does not fit into the Lacie port!). Completely bamboozled now and no idea what to buy - probable just punched the wrong cable (usb c to lightening) because that does not suit to my LaCie
