I have a samsung s10e with operator swisscom. Can I activate the lte function (esim) myself or do I have to have it installed by my operator?

This depends on the type of subscription you have with your operator, so you should inquire with Swisscom directly. However, the LTE network is theoretically less powerful than 4G, then it depends on the power you get. But 4G should be 10 times faster.
