How can the router be tri-band if the IEEE 802.11 standard only defines two bands, at 2.4 GHz and at 5 GHz? How is the tri-band meant?

Helpful answer

It provides two 5 Ghz and one 2.4 Ghz channel at my house. That is probably what is meant by that.

It has 2 different 5 Ghz networks which are set on different channels. For example, network 1 on channel 44 and network 2 on channel 108. Not all devices that are 5 Ghz capable, however, see the channels above 100. Especially the channel above 100 is the fast one. These devices are then automatically only on network 1. Newer good devices then preferably select network 2 and enjoy high speeds. If there is a lot of data traffic on network 2, some switch to the medium-speed network. Many old devices then only see the 2.4 GhZ network and "live" on it.
