Does this hub requires to be permanently physically connected to a PC/Laptop via USB cable (in addition to the micro USB power connector)? In other words: is the wireless feature merely for remote controlling of the USB ports, or does it operate also solely via WiFi?

You can use the Wi-Fi connexion in both way, with the computer only or with the external power supply. :)
