Does anyone know the difference in the designation on the Surface Book: HNM-00006 and HNL-00006?

That's not true. The i7-8650U is only available with 4 cores, and more cores do not mean faster. More cores only bring something if the software supports it.

HNM: Core i7-8650U 2x 1.9GHz clocked
