Can this unit be operated without the keyboard connected to the mains unit?

Yes, the screen can be charged in tablet mode. There is a power connector on the bottom (at the connection).

I don't really understand the question.
The Surface Book 3 is a laptop and therefore has an integrated keyboard that is not detachable. You can always connect an additional keyboard, but you don't have to.
