Can these Fibaro Smoke Sensors also be operated alone via e.g. wifi? Or do I need something like a base station to connect them?

No, this cannot be operated via WLAN. It needs a Z-Wave capable base station. Either Fibaro's own "Home Center" or a third-party product that supports this Z-Wave item, such as the Piper smart home camera.
