Can I connect the gateway to a 4G router, e.g. TP-Link MR600? I would like to set up an outdoor UniFi network. The TP-Link should only provide internet access and not have any router functionality. Can this work or do I need other components?

If the MR600 behaves like a normal router, I don't think there is anything wrong with it. I operate the ISG on 2 routers in parallel, with failover in case the first one drops out. One of them is a cable modem from UPC, the other a Fritzbox.
