A switch is a coupling device: It connects computers, printers and servers within a network (e.g. company building). Data packets can be sent from A to B.
In an Ethernet LAN (Local Area Network), a switch forwards the data using the device address (Media Access Control or MAC for short). In a WAN (Wide Area Network), such as the Internet, for example, the forwarding is based on the IP address. For this purpose, the destination address must be found out with a routing table. This is done by a device called a router. Some newer switches also provide routing functions. These devices are sometimes called IP switches.

You are looking for a switch for private use?
For you as a private customer the transmission speed from the switch is crucial. Do you want to connect computers, NAS and other wired devices without VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) or IPTV (Internet Protocol Television)? Then an "unmanaged" switch - a switch without management functions - is sufficient. These work via plug-and-play: just plug in and get started.
You want to operate IPTV via Swisscom TV over a switch?
Then a switch with so-called IGMP snooping is required (IGMP stands for Internet Group Management Protocol): IGMP snooping ensures that only those devices are operated with the TV data that they need. IGMP snopping thus prevents your home network from crashing.
Are you looking for a professional switch solution?
Switches for business customers should be configurable, either via a web interface or another tool. Among other things, several virtual LANs (VLANs) can be created: A VLAN can be intended for the computers of the employees. Another one for the VoIP phones. While a third one is only used for guest access. Professional switches usually offer the possibility to connect to the gateway via fiber optics. Higher data rates can thus be achieved.

Many network cameras and access points can be operated via PoE (Power-over-Ethernet). Power is also conducted via the Ethernet cable in addition to the data. Corresponding switches therefore enable the saving of one power cable, which can bring about a simplification especially in larger installations.
