Early 1972: The narrator's whole life is still ahead of him. He can already see it all before him and looks forward to it. The only problem is: he hasn't been born yet. To be precise, he hasn't even been conceived; his future parents don't know anything about each other yet, and both have completely different concerns at the moment: His mother is about to fall for a melancholic Southerner, while his father is currently being thrown into the Main with his feet encased in concrete.
