Beginning of 1972: The whole life still lies before the narrator. He sees it all ahead of him, looking forward to it. The problem is, he's not born yet. To be exact, he hasn't even been conceived, his future parents don't know anything about each other yet and both have completely different worries at the moment: His mother is about to fall in love with a melancholic Southern Frenchman, while his father is being thrown into the river Main with his feet set in concrete. How the narrator manages to bring the two together in heartbreakingly comical, breathlessly sad adventures is the greatest storytelling firework. When Tilman Rammstedt writes a novel, we see "suddenly, laughing tears, behind the crazy facade a deep truth" (F.A.Z.).
