Gustav Schwab published his prose narratives of the great ancient mythological complexes between 1838 and 1840, aiming to provide access to ancient literature for an audience without classical philological training. The focus is on the myths surrounding Theseus, Oedipus, the Trojan War, the wanderings of Odysseus, as well as the epic tales of Heracles, the Argonauts, and Aeneas, the mythical founder of Rome.
