Product details
The Swiss Dieter Kienast (1945-1998) is a key figure in European landscape architecture. In light of a significant shift in societal understanding of nature, he embarked on a quest in the 1970s for a synthesis between design and ecology. His open spaces were intended to make the dissolving contrasts between city and countryside legible and to support the navigation of an increasingly complex everyday life through their aesthetic experience. Kienast addressed the new challenges as a designer, planner, researcher, and university lecturer. Urban planning criticism, participatory processes, and the significance of spontaneous urban vegetation play a role alongside art, literature, architecture, and the popular culture of postmodernism. Anette Freytag's award-winning book, which offers the first comprehensive critical engagement with Dieter Kienast, is now available in an English edition for an international audience. The study clearly illustrates how design, theory, and representation are intertwined in Kienast's work and further highlights a significant era in landscape architecture.
