Due to the modularity of Telegärtner's MPO/MTP cabling system, installers and operators need to spend less time and effort on the installation, modification, and maintenance of structured communication cabling for today's and future data centers (according to EN50173-5:2007 and ISO/IEC 24764:2010). The MPO/MTP connector, specified and standardized in the IEC 61754-7 and TIA/EIA 604-5 standards, is the preferred choice alongside the optical LC interface for an information transport system in the commercial buildings and data centers of tomorrow, which require ever-increasing bandwidths and higher speeds. It can be used for parallel optical applications, such as Infiniband with data rates of up to 120 Gb/s, as well as for future Ethernet protocols with 40 Gb/s and 100 Gb/s over OM3, OM4, and OS2 multimode fibers. Similar to the well-known MT-RJ connector, the MPO/MTP connector contains multiple fibers in a single high-precision ferrule, which can be polished to PC or APC to achieve a typical insertion loss of 0.25 dB and a return loss of over 60 dB for singlemode, as well as an insertion loss of 0.2 dB and a return loss of over 30 dB for multimode.
