The Apple gift card is emailed to the recipient and can then be used to credit the Apple account. It is not simply stored in your account as a balance to be retrieved without sending.
If you buy it for yourself, Apple also allows you to add credit to the Apple account directly from the device, without a physical card.

Where it says purchases, it says gift cards at the bottom. Then you have to click on it and the card you bought will appear and then you have to click on show and then you can print out the following page. :D Merry Christmas.
