Product details

Proto-Pasta Rustable Magnetic Iron Filament is ferromagnetic. It reacts to magnets and behaves similarly to pure iron. The iron bound in plastic retains a stable matte metal cast finish when printed but can rust if desired. This is what makes Proto Pasta Iron PLA so interesting:

• Iron feel with 1.5 times the density of standard PLA
• Can rust to create modern objects with a rusty patina in just a few simple steps
• Attracted by magnets (neodymium type recommended for stronger attraction)
• Induction at magnetic saturation approximately 0.15 Tesla
• Relative (to air) permeability - between 5 and 8 regardless of frequency up to 1 MHz
• Permeability - between 62E-7 and 100E-7 H/m, independent of frequency up to 1 MHz
• Higher thermal conductivity than standard plastic
• Easy to print like PLA with less nozzle wear than steel or carbon fiber

This filament is more abrasive than standard PLA. Therefore, we recommend using hardened nozzles with a larger diameter (0.6 mm) made of stainless steel or nickel-plated nozzles from MicroSwiss. Available in diameters of 1.75 and 2.85 mm. 125 g is supplied loose as a package. 500 g is supplied on a spool. Suitable for most PLA-compatible printers such as Lulzbot, Makerbot, FlashForge, Dremel, Ultimaker, Printrbot, and more. FE-PLA is somewhat more brittle in filament form than standard PLA and requires special care when handling. The processing is comparable to standard PLA. No heated bed is required. Printing may be less consistent with smaller nozzles and/or Bowden extruders. We recommend printers with direct drive extruders using 0.6 mm nozzles and prefer a printing temperature of 190-210 °C for the best results.
