Traum im Polarnebel

Juri Rytcheu comes from the far northeastern part of Siberia. He sees his role as a writer as one of saving the endangered culture of his people, the Chukchi. In this novel, he tells the story of a Canadian who, due to unfortunate circumstances, finds himself in a Chukchi settlement near the Arctic Circle. Overwhelmed with despair, he realizes that he must spend the winter there. However, gradually he earns the trust of the locals, and when he has the chance to leave, he cannot bring himself to do so.
