The scientist Grégoire de Fronsac (Samuel Le Bihan) is sent to Gévaudan in southern France in 1767 with the mission to hunt down a beast that is terrorizing the area. It is believed to be a wolf-like creature that is brutally killing more and more people. Accompanied by his friend Mani (Mark Dacascos), he travels to the province to investigate the mysterious events. Together, they gradually uncover monstrous machinations.
Not only is the story of this dark, visually stunning film directed by Christophe Gans (Silent Hill) based on true events, but many of the characters are also inspired by historical figures. The main roles are played by Samuel Le Bihan, Mark Dacascos, and Jérémie Renier. Dominique Borg won a César for Best Costumes, and Christophe Gans received the Grand Prize of European Fantasy Film in Silver at the Sitges Film Festival.
