Multimode fibers have a larger core diameter than single-mode fibers. This results in more light refraction and thus greater attenuation. They are therefore particularly suitable for shorter transmission distances. The OM designation of a fiber optic cable defines the quality class of a multimode fiber optic cable. The classification distinguishes four classes (OM1 to OM4). The distinction is made based on the level of optical attenuation and the possible transmission rate and distance.
