The S and SE series are based on the brand new Raspberry Pi Compute Module 4S, which serves as an intermediate step between the 3+ series and the RevPi 4 series. The Compute Module 4S is a compute module in the form factor of the CM3+, featuring the more powerful Arm Cortex-A72 processor from the CM4.

What is the difference between the S series and the SE series? The difference between the S and SE series is quickly explained: the S series is compatible with all expansion modules, including our fieldbus gateways. The SE series can only be expanded with IO modules and, in the case of the RevPi Connect, with Con modules. Fieldbus gateways are not supported in the SE series.

What was the reason for developing two series? This innovation is also based on the global semiconductor crisis: the required IC, which is responsible for connecting the gateways via the PiBridge, is currently not available to us in sufficient quantities. Since we can see from sales figures that many RevPi users operate their devices without gateways, we decided to launch the SE series. This way, we want to ensure that we can build enough devices to meet all customer requirements.

What should customers consider when transitioning from previous devices to the S or SE series? Customers upgrading from devices with the CM3/3+ to RevPis with the CM4S need to be aware of an important change. The new CPU of the Compute Module 4S is only supported with kernel 5.10. Customers using their own image or KUNBUS image with an older kernel will need to update the kernel.
