The Joy-Car is an autonomous educational robot based on micro:bit and offers a comprehensive platform to delve into the fields of robotics, electronics, and programming. It comes fully assembled (including micro:bit V2) and is ready to use right away. Thanks to the user-friendly BBC micro:bit, the Joy-Car is suitable for ages 8 and up, but it also appeals to older teens and electronics enthusiasts due to its extensive sensor features.
Sensors such as line-tracking, ultrasonic, infrared, and wheel rotation sensors enable functions like autonomous driving and even control via Bluetooth using a second, separate micro:bit. The additional features simulate turn signals, lights, reverse lights, and a horn, enhancing the experience of an autonomous robot car. By using addressable LEDs, individual lighting scenarios can also be created.
A small highlight is the motor-driven ultrasonic sensor, which helps the Joy-Car navigate by looking left and right to determine the best path. Naturally, it signals before turning and continues on its way. The 77-page manual (available in German and English) not only explains the assembly of the robot but also provides clear explanations of all components, sensors, electronics, and motors. Programming can be done in MakeCode or MicroPython and is described in detail.
The Joy-Car has already been used in various classrooms and has proven its effectiveness. With its extensive and versatile functions, which are addressed and clearly explained in the manual, the Joy-Car can be employed in a wide range of teaching formats.
