Product details
With Julia Costa, a young artistic voice emerges, exploring multiple directions while increasingly developing her unique profile. She writes and performs poetry, plays guitar, composes, and sings. Her professional engagement in the social sector and as an organic gardener reveals that Costa's thinking and actions are shaped by empathy and responsibility—by a concern for the lives of those who have a harder time than others, but also by a gentle awareness of the living world itself, such as plants and their recurring cycles. This, of course, finds expression in her artistic work as well. Costa's first book publication tells of an arrival, of gradually finding one’s footing over the course of a year in a place that initially feels foreign and strange. We witness how a nameless "you" struggles for a sense of belonging and rootedness, how the innermost drives and motivations of being human manifest in the here and now, wanting to take on the concrete outlines of a life that can be looked at and reflected upon, a life that can be told. This arrival is not easy and is accompanied by doubts: “You have no stories here / and no shape,” it is said at first; both emerge only gradually, until it can eventually be said: “Look / this is what you need / here / here is life.” The here proves to be a place of possibilities, a challenge to leave behind the traumatic past, to take one’s life into one’s own hands, to write one’s own story, and in doing so, to reclaim participation in the greater whole: “Things that draw circles / you are a part of it / even if you have forgotten.”.
