Haunted stories & more haunted stories

Benson's third collection of ghost stories is arguably his best. Three of the twelve stories included here are great ('The Face', 'And No Bird Sings' and 'The Temple') and three others ('A Tale of an Empty House', 'Naboth's Vineyard' and 'The Corner House'.) ) are close to them in quality.

I particularly recommend: 'The Face' (perhaps Benson's most terrifying story), 'And No Bird Sings' (the best of his giant slug/elemental stories) and 'The Corner House' (not as scary, but with a memorably repulsive incarnation). Of Benson's greatest personal terror - the tall, assertive middle-aged woman).
