Dig in! – this is the encouraging call in the Ruhr area to do your thing, to tackle something, and to see it through, just like coal was mined from the seams with hammers, iron, and physical strength. In football, it embodies the hope for full commitment on the field, even to the point of a blood tackle. And of course, it also means to really dig in at a richly laid table, that is, to fill your belly. Dig in! – this is also the guiding principle for this volume, in which people from the Ruhr area write about their homeland. The richly illustrated collection features short stories submitted for the 7th history competition in the Ruhr area. They tell amusing, reflective, and sometimes tragic tales of work, everyday life, and living in the region.
